Builders
& Contractors Exchange
Annual Events The Builders Exchange sponsors
six events annually. Five of these
events are networking events, and the sixth event is the annual scholarship
competition. These six events are
described below. Annual Dinner Meeting - The annual meeting is held on a Saturday in February. The 2008 Annual Dinner Meeting occurred on Saturday evening, February 9, 2008, as we celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the Builders & Contractors Exchange at the Marriott Norfolk Waterside Hotel. The Band of Oz from North Carolina provided the entertainment for our party. We will return to the Marriott Norfolk Waterside Hotel on February 7, 2009, for our 2009 Annual Dinner Meeting. Butter will provide the music for dining and dancing as we celebrate the 101st Anniversary of the Builders & Contractors Exchange. Mark your calendars now!! Spring Golf – The 2007 spring golf event, will take place at Cedar Point Country Club in Suffolk on Monday, May 12. We will start with a box lunch before golf, and this will be followed by a shotgun start for 128 golfers at 1:00 P.M. Numerous door prizes valued at more than $3,600 will be presented as well as cash and gift certificates to winners in three flights for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places plus four closest-to-the-hole prizes and two long-drive prizes. Someone will be the grand winner of the 50/50 drawing. At about 5:30 P.M. the golfers will enjoy a picnic-style meal of B.B.Q. chicken and pork barbeque with all the fixin’s. Seafood Fest Picnic– Historically the seafood fest has been a mid-June event on the Peninsula. For the past several years we have had this event at Picnic Area #5 at Fort Monroe in Hampton, and on June 11 we will return to Picnic Area #5 at Fort Monroe from 4:00 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. We are hoping for another beautiful Virginia spring afternoon. J.P.’s Catering will supply us with hot and tasty picnic seafood, and the refreshments will be cold and flowing freely. We anticipate another fine time! Fall Golf – Our 8th Annual Golf Scholarship Tournament will return to Riverfront Golf Club in Suffolk on Monday, September 22. The “profits” from this event are used to support the Exchange’s scholarship program. The players will enjoy an exciting afternoon of golf on a course that is always in great shape. In addition to competing for over $4,000 in prizes, the golfers will enjoy a buffet lunch before the golf and a nice dinner afterwards. Numerous door prizes will reward the “lucky” folks. Also, the winners in two flights for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places plus two closest-to-the-hole prizes and two long-drive prizes will receive “special” awards. Plus, another “lucky” individual will win the 50/50 drawing which is usually about $750.00 at this event. Fall Fling Picnic – Historically the fall fling barbeque and seafood picnic has been held on the next-to-last or last Wednesday in October on the Southside. For the past several years we have had this event at the Khedive Picnic Area in the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake, and we expect to continue the tradition in 2008. Our 2007 event occurred from 4:00 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. on Wednesday, October 24. Leon Nixon’s Catering from Edenton, North Carolina, prepared and served an excellent menu, which consisted of Carolina-style barbeque pork, fried chicken, steamed oysters and clams (shucked on site), steamed shrimp, baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, hush puppies, brownies, soda pop, ice tea, lemonade, and beer. Mark your
calendars and come out to support Exchange events.
We publish
additional information in the weekly “Bulletin” well in advance of
each of our events. You will
have a good time!!
Scholarship Competition – In about mid-October of each year, the Exchange scholarship competition for the following school year is announced via notices in the weekly “Bulletin” and faxes to all members on at least two Saturdays (one in October and one in November). For example, notification of the scholarship competition in 2008 for school year 2009 – 2010 will begin on or about October 17. Completed applications will be due in the Exchange Norfolk office on or about December 5. The Exchange normally awards about four scholarships. |
